Shore Bird Waikiki Says Aloha

August 24, 2017 by Island Miler

After 38 years in business, the Shore Bird Waikiki says Aloha and will close at the end of September.

For 38 years the Shore Bird Waikiki has been a fixture at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort.  The restaurant is well-known for its grill-your-own-food concept that has actual grills in a section of the restaurant where patrons stand and cook their meal.  This is a different concept from the numerous yakiniku/Korean BBQ restaurants that have sprung up around town over the years.  And add to that Shore Bird’s beachside location and fabulous views of Diamond Head, and it’s easy to see why the restaurant has been popular for so long.

Shore Bird Waikiki Says Aloha Final Thoughts

Closure

But, as they say, all good things must come to an end.  So, on September 30, 2017, Shore Bird Waikiki and its associated restaurant, Ocean House, will be closing their doors for good.  The reason for the closure is the proprietor’s desire to retire.  And of course, the closing date is based on the lease’s renewal date.  However, this isn’t the end of the road for this concept.

Old is New Again

Currently, the Outrigger Reef Waikiki has only three restaurants: Ocean House, Kani Ka Pila Grille, and Shore Bird.  The closure of both dining venues is too much for the property, so upon closure, Ocean House will immediately reopen to serve guests breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  However, this arrangement is only temporary.  Representatives for Outrigger Hotels & Resorts has stated that the Shore Bird space will be refreshed upon closure, and will reopen as a new restaurant.  That new restaurant, which will be called the Reef Bar and Market Grill, will have a similar concept and menu as Shore Bird.  Projected opening dates for the Reef Bar are between mid and late October 2017.

Once the Reef Bar and Market Grill opens, Ocean House will likely close.  Outrigger, though, is not sure what they’ll do with this space yet.  All the hotelier is saying so far is that it will be a new concept.  Additional details will likely follow the opening of Reef Bar.  However, Outrigger has stated they want to enhance the property’s food & beverage offerings.  Specifically, the property would like to improve its catering and events offerings.

Shore Bird Waikiki Says Aloha Final Thoughts

I’ve never been to Shore Bird or Ocean House, so I can’t say I’d miss either restaurant.  To be honest, I prefer yakiniku concepts over Shore Bird’s concept.  However, I do understand the appeal and see why people love this idea.  And for those people, the restaurant, thankfully, isn’t going anywhere.  While the restaurant will no longer be with us in name, much of what made it popular will remain.  But if you need to get your restaurant grilling fix, here are some of my favorite yakiniku spots on Oahu (in no particular order):

  • Gen Korean BBQ House at Ala Moana Center
  • Yakiniku Don-Day
  • Sura Hawaii
  • Yakiniku Yoshi (haven’t been yet, but know others that have + love it)
