In these trying times, Chase is helping us to stay at home more while also adding some variety to our diets with a new promotion. For a limited time, Chase is offering 5x points on delivery and takeout services.
Qualifying Cards
The 5x points promotion is valid on four cards – the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred, the Chase Freedom, and the Chase Freedom Unlimited. Qualifying purchases must be made with these four cards between April 10 and May 31 to qualify. And, there is a limit of $500 in total spend on each card, which equates to 2,500 Ultimate Rewards points.
Now, the disclosure for the promotion is broken down by card. So, I think it’s safe to assume that you can spend up to $500 per card. So, if you have all four cards, you could spend $2,000 and earn 10,000 points. But, that’s A LOT of money to spend on delivery and takeout over the course of a month and a half.
For me personally, I have three of the qualifying cards. Not that I’d spend that much anyway. Especially on the participating platforms.
Participating Platforms
While it would be nice to have the bonus apply to all delivery and takeout services, Chase has an established relationship with a couple of them already. So, it’s only natural that the bonus applies to those two services. And, of course, those services are DoorDash and Tock.

Of course, availability varies by area, which should be a problem if you live in the downtown area of a large metropolitan area. But, unfortunately, for me, my options are much more limited. That is unless I’m willing to do takeout, which is generally a no right now. I’m really trying to not leave home as much as possible.
DoorDash DashPass
It’s worth reminding that the above cards do offer complimentary DashPass memberships right now. More specifically:
- Sapphire Reserve: free DashPass membership for at least one year when you activate by December 31, 2021. Cardholders also receive up to $60 in statement credits when you purchase from restaurants on DoorDash for both 2020 and 2021. But, remember, when you earn the statement credit, you won’t earn points – which is fair. Be sure to keep that in mind, though’
- Sapphire Preferred: free DashPass membership for at least one year when you activate by December 31, 2021
- Freedom: free DashPass membership for three months. Then, you receive half off the DashPass subscription fee for the next nine months
- Freedom Unlimited: free DashPass membership for three months. Then, you receive half off the DashPass subscription fee for the next nine months
Why You Shouldn’t Use the DashPass Benefit Right Now
At the moment, I don’t think it makes sense to use the complimentary DashPass benefit. The reason being that DoorDash is offering free delivery for orders made with many local restaurants.

Chase is Offering 5x Points on Delivery and Takeout, Final Thoughts
I think it’s great that Chase is doing this, and is a smart marketing move. Especially at a time in which, I’m sure, credit card spending is down. Especially on categories like restaurants. I know it sure as hell is for me! And, while I may not get a ton of use out of this promotion, I’m sure I’ll use it at least a little. After all, my favorite cookies are now available as take-and-bake dough via Tock, as is my favorite bakery, and DoorDash has a few options I like in my area.
