Diamond Head State Monument Closures

September 12, 2017 by Island Miler

The Makapuu Lighthouse Trail is my favorite hike, but the most popular hike on Oahu is Diamond Head.  And to keep it safe, Diamond Head State Monument closures will begin next week.

The Icon of Waikiki

Diamond Head, or Leahi in Olelo Hawaii (Hawaiian language), is one of Hawaii’s most iconic natural features.  People from around the globe instantly recognize the prominent Waikiki landmark.  So it’s no surprise, then, that the hiking trail at the Diamond Head State Monument is one of the most popular in the state.  And because of its popularity, the Diamond Head trail needs regular upkeep.

As part of an ongoing series improvement at the Monument, the trail will begin the final stage of its rockfall mitigation work.  This third and final stage will begin on Monday, September 18, 2017, and is expected to be completed in early December 2017.  Initially, the summit trail will be closed weekdays from about noon.  And all hikers already on the trail will need to off the trail by 2 pm.  The summit trail will, however, be open on weekends and state holidays from 6 am to 6 pm.  Full day closures will become necessary later on in the project, though full closure dates announcement when determined.

Diamond Head Closure Final Thoughts

Access limitations and full closures can be a bummer, especially when you’re on vacation and are short on time.  However, preventive maintenance is always a good thing and will help keep the trail from having unscheduled closures in the future.  And in a state that isn’t big on preventive maintenance, I’ll take what we can get.

It’s been a long time, though, since I’ve been on this trail.  And it’s one that’s on my radar to do again soon.  When I do finally make it, you can expect to see a full report on my adventures!

Thanks for the heads-up on the Diamond Head trail closures. I will be visiting Oahu in October and this very useful.
