Pichilemu, Chile

Pichilemu, Chile is one of the worlds best surfing spots. I made my way to Pichilemu during my trip to Chile in January of 2010. While it was a long and quiet road to get to this coastal city, as soon as we arrived in Pichilemu, we noticed all kinds of people walking the beach and staying around town.

During our one night stay in Pichilemu, most of our time was spent walking the beach and soaking in the surroundings. The town reminded me of both a surf village and a third world country. While some pieces of infrastructure were built up to support the tourism associated with surfing, most of the town had dirt roads and felt very much like it was part of a developing nation.

The most surpising thing in Pichilemu? Probably the Alpaca that was walking along the beach. It seemed really hot to be walking the beach in a fur coat like that!

One of the things we enjoyed in Pichilemu that we couldn’t find in the rest of Chile was the Chilean Seabass (otherwise known as the Patagonian Toothfish).

Our accommodations were quite modest. A surf shack that looked and felt like it wasn’t updated since the 1950’s. It felt a lot like sleeping inside of a camper and I’m pretty sure it gave me bed bugs. I don’t think there are any 3, 4 or 5 star hotels in Pichilemu, so if that’s your fancy, look elsewhere.
