Hurricane Sandy, HHonors and Charity

November 5, 2012 by jeffsetter

Being a lifelong midwesterner, I have very little first hand experience with extreme weather like hurricanes, but I can appreciate their power and do what I can do to donate money where I can to help in the relief efforts. Hurricane Sandy has directly affected many people who I know to various degrees. From devastating to seriously inconvenienced. I’m very fortunate that my travel plans brought me to the west coast of the US as opposed to New Jersey, where I was two weeks ago. Many others were not so lucky.

It is going to take a long time for many communities in the east coast to get back to normal. I am planning to donate to the cause this week, and I am guessing that many others are planning to donate as well.

I’m likely not the only one, judging from some emails I have received regarding donations, like this one from Hilton offering 10 Bonus Points for every $1 donated.

While points should be the furthest thing from our minds as we look to provide our time, money and resources to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy, I don’t see anything wrong in taking advantage of these types of offers when they are available.

Does the availability of points make you more likely to donate to the cause? Would you donate to one charity over another to achieve a bonus? I would love to hear honest answers and opinions if you have them!
