El Chaltén

While we were in El Calafate, we rented a car for two days and drove over to El Chaltén.

I will caution you about driving. It is very desolate. A gas station between El Calafate and El Chaltén does not exist. When we tried to fill up in El Chaltén, the only petrol station was out of gas. Luckily, we had enough to make it round trip to El Calafate. However, if you do decide to self-explore, you should bring extra gas.

El Chaltén is a village actually within Los Glaciares National Park in Patagonia. It’s a gateway to trails surrounding the peaks of Cerro Torre and the well known Mount Fitz Roy to the northwest.

We tried to stay one night in El Chaltén. Be prepared to book early, or stay in rustic accommodations. We did notice several buildings for accommodations were under construction while we were there.
