Grapes Ready for Harvest in Sonoma County

September 3, 2014 by jeffsetter

I spent much of Labor Day weekend exploring some of the beautiful areas north of San Francisco, experiencing great food, fun hikes and lots of wine along the way. On Sunday we stopped at one of our favorite wineries in Sonoma county and had a library tasting of some of the special wines they had been storing for 10+ years.

In between tastings, I took some time to photograph the grapes surrounding the property. Many of the grapes were looking fully ripe and ready to be picked. Some leaves were even changing, which is early in the season for California wines. No doubt that the current record drought is contributing to an early harvest.

Can you share the name of the winery you visited? I’ve been up to Napa/Sonoma a dozen times or so but I haven’t heard of these ‘library’ tastings. How do you get one of these, and what’s the cost?

    Thanks!

Most library tastings are for wine club members only, so it pays to be on their mailing lists to hear when things are happening. We were at Wellington Vineyards in Glen Ellen. Our library tasting was free as members, but I’m sure some others do come at a premium.

My wife and I live in Sonoma County (Windsor); let us know next time you’re in the area. We’d be happy to show you some hidden gems (for wine and food).
