Hands Free Luggage Holder?

July 22, 2016 by Island Miler

Have you ever thought to yourself that it would be great to, uh, not hold your luggage while you walk through the airport?  Well this guys has!  For the sole purpose of being able to hold his coffee, talk on the phone, and roll your luggage at the same time it seems.  And that’s why he’d developed his very own hands free luggage holder.

Actually, My Hitch‘s inventor, Robert Lian, said the idea came to him while we waited for a flight.  He wondered, and I quote, “[w]hy aren’t there any Hands Free devices to carry luggage?”

Ok, fair enough.  Why hasn’t there ever been a hand free luggage holder?  In my opinion, I just don’t see a big market for these things.  Why you ask?  Because My Hitch probably isn’t as practical as it seems and kind of conflicts with frequent travelers’ standard practices.  In fact, just the way the device works already sent up red flags for me.

You see, My Hitch is basically a two-sided hook.  One side hooks onto your luggage handle, the other onto your belt… That’s a problem, because as frequent travelers know, you don’t wear a belt through security.  And wearing a belt to pull this thing, then take it off before security, and putting it back on after?  That seems like far more trouble than it’s worth.  Yes, technically you can wear a belt through the TSA Pre-Check line, but I don’t.  I don’t because, for whatever reason, my belt buckle always seems to set the metal detector off.  It isn’t even that big!  So I just don’t take the chance.  And despite the product being marketed for both men and women, how many women do you see running through the airport wearing belts?

Yes, you probably could use this hands free luggage holder if you aren’t wearing a belt, but would you want to?  I think it’ll be more uncomfortable and/or you pants may fall… or even rip!  Especially since My Hitch advertises that the thing is good for up to 25 pounds.  Yikes!  That definitely wouldn’t be comfortable at all.  And can you imagine how this thing would be on slopes and uneven surfaces?  One bump and I’m sure the thing would have some issues.

Despite all that, I give the guy credit.  He came up with an idea and ran with it.  Would I ever buy a hands free luggage holder?  No.  I prefer to hold my bag.  I’m sure there are those, however, that will buy it… Even at $18/each!  And if you or someone you know does buy it/has one, please let me know it is!  Even though I would not buy or use one, I’m curious to hear/see some feedback!

I NEVER have to take my belt off. Regular screening or TSA-Pre. How much metal does your belt have on it? Some kind of Rodeo Championship belt? ;-)

Patrick, I’m convinced I’m in the minority with this issue! Actually, my “nice belt” is fine. It’s a standard leather belt from Coach. But the belt I wear when I’m wearing jeans and a t-shirt? Nope! It’s one of those fabric belts from Quicksilver that was popular 10-20 years ago. It has more metal, as the clasp is a solid piece of metal, but the size is very similar.

    KH,

I don’t see this “taking off” anytime soon. I would never buy one. Plus, you can simply get one at Bed Bath and Beyond, it’s called an over the door hook.
