Over the past couple of weeks, rumors began spreading that Japan would be covering half our tourists’ expenses when they reopen to visitors. But, no, Japan is NOT covering half your trip expenses as the rumors suggest.
Background
As is the case with many destinations around the world, Japan has experienced a massive drop-off in tourist arrivals. And, as you may imagine, there are a few reasons for this. The biggest two are the ongoing pandemic, which is causing most to avoid traveling whatsoever, as well as the fact that Japan has closed its borders to most foreigners.
Having become a major tourist destination in recent years, though, the drop in tourism has, undoubtedly, had a major impact on the economy. Especially since Japan was gearing up for the 2020 Summer Olympics this year. And, as we all know, that’s no longer happening this year. MAYBE we’ll see the Olympics return in 2021.

Then, of course, over the past couple of weeks, rumors began emerging that Japan would commit about $12.5 billion to help kickstart the tourist industry again. And, as the rumors go, they’d use the money to entice tourists to return by offering to pay half their expenses.
As is often the case with rumors, though, there were no details. We didn’t know what expenses would qualify, if there was a limit, and how we’d get the money. But, of course, that’s all moot now.
Japan is NOT Covering Half Your Trip Expenses
In response to all the rumors, the Japan Tourism Agency released a statement clarifying the program. Called Go To Travel, the program is actually meant to spur DOMESTIC travel. So, no, Japan will not be paying you or me to come to pay a visit. Which, honestly, makes a lot of sense.
Japan has a massive domestic travel market. So, why not focus on getting people to travel domestically, right? That way, you drum up economic activity, while keeping the money in Japan.
Japan is NOT Covering Half Your Trip Expenses, Final Thoughts
Is it a bummer that the rumor isn’t true? Sure. But, in reality, would you want to travel internationally in the near future? Personally, I wouldn’t. At least not until the pandemic is fully under control. After all, travel insurance doesn’t cover issues you may encounter during a resurgence of cases. And, I really wouldn’t want to risk getting stuck outside of the country should things flair back up too.
