Hilton Matches Marriott Cancellation Policy

July 19, 2017 by Island Miler

As expected Hilton matches Marriott cancellation policy.

Nearly a month ago Marriott changed its cancellation policy.  Gone are the days being able to cancel your reservation 24 hours prior to arrival.  Instead, Marriott now requires guests to cancel their stay at least 48 hours in advanced.

I say at least because a large number of Marriott’s properties already have and will continue to have a 72-hour cancellation policy.  This is especially true of properties in popular cities and vacation destinations.

As expected, Hilton is now changing its cancellation policy to mirror Marriott’s.  And so, beginning July 31, 2017, you’ll need to cancel cancel your Hilton stay at least 48 hours in advanced.  Like Marriott, Hilton’s more popular properties will also require cancellations to be made at least 72 hours in advanced.  But really popular properties like the Hilton Hawaiian Village require 72 hour advanced cancellations.

As I’ve said before, this change was expected.  Marriott and Hilton are the largest lodging companies in the world.  And with that size comes the ability for them to do as they please.  So it makes sense that Marriott would make this change and that Hilton would follow suite.

Changes that make policies even more restrictive are never welcome.  And this change is certainly one that will have a profoundly negative impact on business travelers.  For travelers such as myself, though, this change in cancellation policy doesn’t affect me at all.  Well, it does give me one less day to change reservations if I find a lower rate, but oh well.
