The Courtyard Kauai at Coconut Beach rebrand will convert the limited service hotel to a full-service one.
Pacific Business News reports that the Courtyard Kauai at Coconut Beach is about to undergo some significant changes. The property’s current owners, Outrigger Hotels & Resorts will begin renovations in 2018. And once those renovations are complete the property will be rebranded as a Sheraton.
Coming Full Circle
Built in the 1980’s, the Courtyard Kauai at Coconut Beach was originally a Sheraton. However, over the years, the property changed hands and brands a number of times. The most recent change occurred in 2010 when the then Aston Kauai Beach Makaiwa Hotel became a Courtyard.
According to the current owners, though, the Courtyard brand is a poor fit for the property. Because the property was originally built to be a Sheraton, it was meant to be a full-service property. And so Outrigger Hotels & Resorts seeks to move the property back upmarket.
Renovation Timeline
The renovation is still in the design phase and isn’t expected to begin for another year. Work will include upgrades to public areas, as well as all 311 guest rooms. And that’s probably a good thing because, the guestrooms, which last saw a refresh in the early 2000’s, look dark and dated.
However, the public space at the Courtyard Kauai look much better and last saw a refresh just six years ago.
Brand Competition
It’s worth noting that Kauai is already home to the Sheraton Kauai Resort. This existing Sheraton property is about 30 miles away from the Courtyard in the desireable Poipu resort area.
As you can see, the pool is a lot bigger than the one at the Courtyard. The beach at Poipu is also quite a bit nicer than the one fronting the Courtyard. However, the decor of the rooms are both equally bad, and the Courtyard looks like they may even a little bigger.
Courtyard Kauai at Coconut Beach Rebrand Final Thoughts
I’m looking forward to seeing what the re-imagined Courtyard Kauai Coconut Beach will look like. I’ve never been to this particular property or its future competitor, though, so I can’t really comment on either. However, it’ll be interesting to see how the Courtyard’s owners handle the renovation in regards to the existing Sheraton, and how they intend to compete. Unfortunately, looks like we’ll need to wait another year till more information is available.
