A few weeks ago we celebrated Amanda’s early retirement with a quick trip up the Mendocino coast in northern California. While all of the destinations were excellent (including our private cliff), this was probably the most highly rated location on TripAdvisor for the area.

You can enter MacKerricher state park for free, and on a weekday there are plenty of parking spaces available. Our first vantage point was along the boardwalk to Laguna Point.
Along the boardwalk we were drawn to the a low tide area with many tide pools and a reddish growth on the rocks (like the cover image of this post).
We made it to the seal point, but they were a little too far away to get detailed shots of the harbor seals. Just a little tease.
Next, we parked at Lake Cleone and walked to another harbor seal viewing area. We were told on entry to the park that this is where the next generation of harbor seals was being raised. The seal area was roped off from a distance, so again we weren’t able to get any close up seal photos.
But I did have some fun experimenting with black and white post processing.
Trying to photograph animals definitely reinforced my need for a solid zoom lens if I want to be able to take any animal photos during our upcoming travels.
As for MacKerricher state park, I would say that I preferred other beaches in Fort Bragg more than the park. It is a beautiful place, but I don’t know that it lived up to the TripAdvisor rating for me.
