Black and White Overcast Sky in South Africa [Photo of the Week]

Vuyani Safari 3

Since work has gotten in the way of posting about my Safari in South Africa this week, I figured I would give you the next best thing: a preview of what is to come.

While most of the photos on this trip involved chasing wild animals and hoping they post for us (and hoping the safari driver will stop for us to snap photos), this photo was taken in impromptu form, away from the action.

Everyone else in our safari vehicle was focused on a pack of animals to our left. Since I couldn’t get a good shot of the action, I looked to our right and noticed a dead tree just sitting there begging me to take a photo. Naturally I had to oblige.

The original photo itself was nice, but not spectacular. So I decided to experiment a little bit with removing the color, cropping and bumping up the contrast.

While the original photo is pretty average, I love how it looks like when given the black and white treatment. When there is not a lot of color in the sky to start, stripping out the color to create black and white photos can provide a more dramatic effect.

Next week we will continue with our safari journey, I promise!
