This post is part of Random Hotel Review Month. Today we review the Four Points by Sheraton Asheville Downtown in North Carolina from my September 2013 visit. Other Random Hotel Reviews: Westminster Hotel, Conrad Istanbul, Hilton Garden Inn Mountain View.
I have declared my love for Asheville in a post titled Who Needs Europe When You Have Asheville, North Carolina? Now as part of random review month I am going to share my thoughts on my accommodations for the weekend. Since I was in town for a wedding I wanted to keep my expenses down for the trip and ended up booking the room for 7,000 starpoints per night.
Given that most of our time for the weekend was spent outside of our hotel room, all that we really needed out of the hotel was a place to leave our stuff and get ready for the activities each day. You could say that we had modest expectations for the hotel, but were hopeful that it would be a quality stay like our experiences at other Four Points hotels.
How did the hotel stack up? Read on to find out!
The check-in process was painful and took longer than we expected upon arrival. Even though we arrived at a peak time for arrivals there was only one person working the desk and they took their time with each customer. After about 5 minutes it was our turn to check in. While our room was recognized right away, when I asked about my benefits for the Delta/SPG Crossover rewards program and they looked at me like I had come from another planet. They had never heard of the program and did not know the benefits. After explaining what the program entailed I was given a few free drink tickets and sent on my way.
On my way to the room the first thing I noticed was the terrible smell of cleaning products in the hallway. Do you know that feeling when you walk on damp carpet and smell heavy cleaning products and you just KNOW that something is being covered up? That’s how I felt about the hallways and guestrooms of this hotel. Something happened here and I don’t want to know what it was.
Rooms at the Four Points Asheville Downtown
The room was a standard king sized room and was standard in every way. The room size, bed, bathroom and seating areas were all adequate but unremarkable. I apologize for some of the photos turning out blurry.
In addition to the room, I wanted to show what my view from outside the window looked like to help you visualize where the road is across the street from the hotel. Starting at 6 AM on Saturday morning (this was the night after the wedding), we were woken by a running event that was taking place right outside of our hotel. It wasn’t voices that woke us, though. No, it was beating drums at the finish line for the race that filled our room with an unending stream of noise until around 11AM. Good Morning Asheville!
Overall I think that it would be best to call the hotel rooms average to well below average depending on your standards.
Restaurant and Bar Area
Since Asheville is an awesome town for foodies, we did not eat at the hotel restaurant. We did, however, have a few drinks using our free drink tickets. The restaurant and bar area seemed to be recently remodeled with a modern feel. It was a nice departure from the rest of the hotel.
Overall Impressions of the Four Seasons Asheville Downtown
While our weekend in Asheville was an incredible experience, this was a forgettable hotel stay. I would come back to Asheville in a heartbeat, I would stay elsewhere. Half of the wedding party staid at the Renaissance hotel across the street and that likely would have been a better choice.
I appreciate that the hotel was within walking distance to downtown Asheville, but that is not enough to make me want to stay here again. Depending on your needs in visiting Asheville I would look at other options.
