Hyatt’s footprint is relatively small in Hawai’i, especially when compared to its larger peers – Marriott and Hilton – and even local ones, such as Outrigger. However, Hyatt is coming to West O’ahu with a newly built property, unlike most of its recent additions.
Now, before we get any further into this post, I want to clarify something right out of the bat. Though Hyatt is coming to West O’ahu, this won’t be a grand new Andaz or Alila resort in Ko Olina. No. Instead, the new development will be in the burgeoning Ewa-Kapolei corridor where much of the new construction has been, including a Hampton Inn by Hilton, and Embassy Suites by Hilton, and a Residence Inn by Marriott. An Elements by Westin is also slated for the area, though an opening date has not yet been announced. Moreover, this new Hyatt hotel will actually be a two-in-one concept which, if I’m not mistaken, will be the first of its kind in Hawai’i.
Hyatt is Coming to West O’ahu
While it’s disappointing that a Hyatt is coming to West O’ahu and won’t be a lovely resort, it’s always good to have more points and miles options, especially for those who don’t want or need a hotel near the beach. And if you do, Hyatt has you covered in Waikiki with the Hyatt Place, Hyatt Centric, and Hyatt Regency. But for those who don’t want or need this, these new hotels may be a good fit.
So, what brands will these two new Hyatt’s be? Hyatt Place and Hyatt House, which will be another first for Hawai’i. I’ve stayed in a Hyatt House in San Jose before, and it’s pretty similar to most other extended stay properties. This one in particular will feature 108 Hyatt Place rooms and 132 Hyatt House rooms, 86 of which will include kitchenettes, and 19 will have balconies. The hotel will also have an outdoor pool with hot tub, 3,000 sq/ft of meeting space, a dining room, a business center, and a fitness center.
I wouldn’t lament the lack of balconies at every room too much. the overall structure will only be five stories tall and will be located at 91-3456 Nana Hope St. For those unfamiliar with the area, that places it in the Ho’opili master-planned community, which places it roughly a block away from the University of Hawai’i West O’ahu Skyline station.
Connectivity
The new Hyatt Place/Hyatt House in Ho’opili is slated to break ground in 2025, and should finish construction in 2027-2028. 2025 is also the year in which the second phase of Honolulu’s Skyline mass transit system is supposed to open, extending the current eastern terminus from Hālawa to Kalihi, and includes the station at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
For those who prefer or need to drive, the new hotel will be right off of Kualaka’i Parkway, which itself directly links to the H-1 Freeway. So, either way you travel, getting to the hotel from the airport will be quite easy.
Hyatt is Coming to West O’ahu, Final Thoughts
Even though they’re not aspirations properties, I think it’s great that Hyatt is coming to West O’ahu. But don’t discount a nicer property in the future. The nearby Hoakalei master-planned community has several parcels of waterfront resort-zoned real estate available for development, one of which recently hit the market. Ko Olina also has space available. That said, I’d expect to see more of these types of properties, especially since Koa Ridge in Central O’ahu and the upcoming Aloha Stadium Entertainment District near Pearl Harbor all have plans for hotel accommodations, at least it their current master plans.
