Mauritius, Munich, Oktoberfest, Berchtesgaden and Paris: Hotel Review – Hilton Munich City
Trip Summary: Back in January of 2012 I decided to put my frequent flyer mileage knowledge, skills and learnings to the test and book the honeymoon of our dreams for my wife and me. While it took several months for the plans to fully materialize, the result was an amazing, while not always seamless trip. This is not only a recap of the trip we took and how we got there, but also the beginning of more formal travel blogging to showcase my adventures in the United States and abroad.
This trip will be summarized in the following topics:

Fortunately, the Hilton had a room ready for us – an “upgraded” to a King Hilton Deluxe Room, which offered a whopping 32 extra square feet of space. To be honest, the space wasn’t really that important to us at this point, as we just wanted to have a place to place our baggage after 30+ hours on the road. At the time I was happy that I was upgraded for being on our honeymoon… but I was later annoyed to found out that they charged us a fair amount of money for the guaranteed upgrade.
The bed was a nicer size king bed with plenty of space on either side.
The rest of the room had a love-seat, desk and TV area.
The entry way had a large closet and enough storage for all of our luggage.
The bathroom was decently sized, with two sinks and a large mirror.
The tub and shower combination was a disappointment. The tub hardly drained and the shower lacked pressure.
The highlight of our stay at the hotel was the access we had to the executive lounge in the top floor of the hotel. The lounge was spacious and featured many excellent food and drink options in the morning and evening.
It also featured an excellent selection of beers, including some local German beers we don’t normally see in the US.
During the evening there were many Bavarian options like sausages, breads and mustard.
There was also a full bar with several options for those enjoying liquor.
The lounge also had a nice balcony overlooking the street outside of the hotel.
Overall, the hotel had nice amenities and was in an excellent location (right off of the main metro line in Munich, and easily accessible from the airport). The furnishings themselves had a little dated feel and appeared to have survived many years of wear and tear. The hotel could use some updating in the future if it wants to be viewed as an elite place to stay.
It is one of the few Hilton properties in Munich, so it’s a good option if you are loyal to that particular hotel brand. I very much enjoy staying at major brand hotels while traveling internationally, because it provides me access to amenities like their executive lounge, which represents a nice cost savings if you take advantage of the breakfast, beverages and snack options.
When I visit Munich next, I will likely stay at another hotel in order to see what else is available.

I’m going to Munich for Oktoberfest this yr too! Do you have any suggestions on what else to do? How did you get from the airport to your hotel?

Oktoberfest can take a good amount of your time. I also really enjoyed Asamkirche, a church in the middle of town. The Glockenspiel is cool too, although it’s really only a few minutes of your day. I highly recommend trying to go to Berchtesgaden if you have some extra time. That was the highlight of Germany for me.
Getting to the city form the airport is super easy. There is a subway train that takes you right into the heart of downtown from the airport. Super easy to get around!
